His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE and Ruler of Abu Dhabi, has passed away. He was 73 years old.
This was officially announced by the Ministry of Presidential Affairs. Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan has been President of the UAE and Ruler of Abu Dhabi since November 3, 2004. His Highness Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan was President of the UAE from 1971 until his death on November 2, 2004. He was chosen to succeed his father, the late His Highness Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, who served as the first President of the UAE. The UAE has declared 40 days of official mourning following the death of the head of state.
Born in 1948, Sheikh Khalifa was the second President of the UAE and the 16th Ruler of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi. He was the eldest son of Sheikh Zayed. In addition, he launched an initiative to develop a nomination system for members of the Federal National Council, which was seen as the first step towards establishing direct elections in the UAE.
Sheikh Khalifa was a good listener, humble and had a deep interest in the affairs of his people. He was a much-loved figure in the UAE and the region. He interacted directly with the public from time to time through official missions and other occasions.
