Abu Dhabi: Eco-friendly free driverless taxi service has been extended to Abu Dhabi roads. The move comes after a successful test run on Yas Island.
Abu Dhabi Media has released a video of a driverless vehicle being serviced on public roads on Twitter. With the help of advanced cameras and sensors, they can detect the presence of other vehicles without moving and control their speed.
In the first phase, 3 self-driving vehicles were launched on the road. The eco-friendly self-driving vehicle is the first of its kind in the region and soon more vehicles will be rolled out to different areas, the municipality and the transport department said.
The taxi was unveiled at the Smart City Summit on November 23 at Yas Island, Abu Dhabi. In connection with this, free travel was allowed to 9 places on the island, including Yas Beach and Etihad Arena. It was a boon for visitors to hotels, restaurants, shopping malls and coffee shops.
This was followed by the expansion of autonomous vehicles to the road. The test run on Yas Island was followed by scientific testing in various fields. The driver's seat of the battery - powered self-driving vehicle will have a safety officer during the test phase but will not control the vehicle.
He said the aim was to allay people's fears of riding in a driverless vehicle and to understand their interaction with other vehicles on the road. The Safety Officer will only intervene in case of an emergency. You can also book a robot taxi by downloading the TXAI app.
