Smoking with Children

Dubai: The UAE Federal Public Prosecution has warned that a person will be fined if there is the presence of children under the age of 12 while smoking inside a vehicle or in a closed room.

The first charge is 5,000 dirhams and the second is Dh10,000. It is part of the Wadeema Act, which aims to protect children. Do not sell tobacco or tobacco products to children under 18 years of age.

The law requires sellers to ask for a child's age record when selling tobacco products. Police officers on patrol can take action if they see adults smoking in vehicles with children.

The transfer of intoxicating substances to children is also a serious offense under Section 12 of the Wadima Act. Strict action will be taken against the accused.

Do not leave children alone in the vehicle

Measures aimed at the safety of children have also been tightened. A fine of 10,000 dirhams will be imposed in cases of children under the age of 7 being trapped in a vehicle.

Police have rescued 39 children trapped in vehicles this year. This includes cases where children are locked in a vehicle and parents go shopping. If the vehicle is not locked after parking in the parking lot, children may get caught while playing.

Care should also be taken to close the window panes of the vehicle. It is also not safe to keep the children inside alone if the vehicle's engine is on.

Accidents can occur if they change gears or turn off the AC and engine while they are playing.

Federal Law No. 15 Regarding Tobacco Control is the main law governing tobacco control in the UAE. The Act is comprehensive and contains below rules.
  • restrictions on smoking in public places;
  • restrictions on tobacco advertising, promotion and sponsorship;
  • health warnings on packaging and labeling, among other areas.
