Authorities have warned of heavy fines for misusing VPNs in the UAE. If caught, a fine of upto 1 million dirhams awaits you.
Also, depending on the purpose for which the VPN or virtual private network was used, there may be imprisonment.
For example, using any communication services, audio and video channels blocked by the UAE government by concealing the IP address using VPN can result in imprisonment along with fines.
Article 9 of the UAE Cyber Law states that whoever uses a fraudulent computer network protocol address by using a false address or a third-party address by any other means to commit a crime or prevent its discovery shall be punished by temporary imprisonment and a fine not less than Dh500,000 and not in excess of Dh2 million or either of these two penalties.
Under cyber law in the UAE, this is an offense punishable by a fine of up to Dh1 million, imprisonment for one year or both.
Penalties of up to Rs 20 lakh and imprisonment for committing any crime or concealing a crime using VPN in this manner. If you are a foreign national, the court may order deportation.
