The Ajman Public Transportation Authority (APTA) has started a smart metre system for private taxis in the northern emirate. The device has optical sensors, will monitor the speed of private taxis and has updated maps. The device also allows simple payment and safety mechanisms for passengers.
Omar Muhammad Lootah, Executive Director, Operations, APTA, said the authorities were keen to upgrade private taxi services by adopting smart applications and going hi-tech. The initiatives are synchronized with Ajman’s bid to accelerate the drive towards the digital transformation of the emirate.
The APTA has launched and initiated a massive infrastructure development in the transport sector.
The smart metre device and mechanism would help the department to track all private taxis operating in Ajman, Lootah said.
Also, the digital transformation drive contributed to the abolition of cash payments and further enhanced the use of Masar – accepted in public transport in Ajman – credit and debit cards in the emirate, he added.
A passenger also gets a message on his/her mobile phone of transaction detail after a ride is completed.
Besides, the device has made it easier for APTA’s control centre to keep in touch with private taxi drivers and the mechanism comes in handy during any emergency.
Lootah cited several inherent advantages of the mechanism such as collecting data on private taxis and drivers, displaying active and cancelled trips etc.
“Also, the lost and found items can be easily tracked,” he added.
