Abu Dhabi autorities has renamed an island which is located to the east of Sir Bani Yas Wildlife Park in the Al Dhafra Region as "Al Marmar" Island to show the historic importance of the region and promote the local traditions while it is reflecting the heritage of the UAE.

Abu Dhabi's Department of Municipalities and Transport has renamed the island 'Al Marmar', Arabic name for Alabaster.

The naming comes upon the directives of Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi, Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces and President of the Abu Dhabi Executive Council, His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, and with the monitoring of H.H. Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Ruler's Representative in Al Dhafra Region.

Alabaster, is known to be a rigid and solid rock, is very commonly found on the island.

Chairman of the Department, Falah Mohammad Al Ahbabi said that the dept. has prioritized the process of renaming several other areas of the emirate also, as per the directives of the UAE’s leadership to preserve the Emirati traditions and keep speed with the process of development witnessed by the emirate. 

Al Ahbabi also said that the new names generally reflect the UAE’s historical heritage. 

TheAl Marmar Island is 4.3-square metre island which is located to the east of "Sir Bani Yas Wildlife Park" in Al Dhafra Region and is full of alabaster (Al Marmar - Arabic name) rocks that reflects the beauty of the island’s natural colours.

Abu Dhabi has many charming and beautiful natural landscapes and various unique islands, which keeps the emirate rich in biodiversity and abundant natural resources.
