The UAE’s moon-sighting committee done the meeting on Thursday evening and sighted the crescent moon to indicate the start of the Ramadan 2020.
The committee meeting held partly through the video conference to take the decision of Start of Ramadan. The committee, chaired by Sultan Al Badi, Minister of Justice, has done the meeting after maghrib prayers.
Sharia courts across the country was also a part of viewing the moon sightings. The Lunar Calendar Committee at the Abu Dhabi Judicial Department also took part in the decision making.
The Islamic or Hijri calendar is decided by moon cycles and crescent sightings, which are either 29 days or 30 days long.
The sighting of a new crescent moon signals the start of a new month. Ramadan falls on the ninth month of the Islamic calendar and holds great significance for the Muslim community across the globe.
